Comic Book Review – Doctor Who: The Eleventh Doctor #1

July 18, 2014 by Villordsutch

Villordsutch reviews Doctor Who: The Eleventh Doctor #1…

A stunning new era begins for the Eleventh Doctor, as played by Matt Smith!  Alice Obiefune has just lost her mother when the Doctor explodes into her life.  But what does this grieving young woman have to do with the career of a 70s musician, an amnesiac alien, and a terrifying cosmic threat?  In the wake of the second Big Bang, find out what the Doctor gets up to when Amy and Rory aren’t around!  Series architects Al Ewing (Loki: Agent of Asgard, Mighty Avengers, Trifecta) and Rob Williams (Revolutionary War, Ordinary, Miss Fury, The Royals: Masters of War, Trifecta) kick off a whirlwind adventure through eternity with artist Simon Fraser (Nikolai Dante, Grindhouse, Doctor Who)!  On-sale in comic stores from July 23

With just over a month to go before we see Peter Capaldi officially begin his Who series on the BBC (and Worldwide) Titan Comics has began its release of The Eleventh Doctor (Matt Smith) comics, as well as The Tenth Doctor (see here for review).  Having the Doctor Who comics return is like finding a long-lost friend – you’re so pleased to see them make an entrance back into your life.

This Eleventh Doctor release captures so well the Matt Smith era of the Who television show, which in-turn captured the Patrick Troughton clownish behaviour, which on a penny could spin in to the real malevolent Lord of Time that no enemy should cross nor fool should test, to the person who would stop the world to help the old lady cross the road safely, and here in the comic we see this.  From chasing the rainbow dog down the street and then to Alice’s flat Al Ewing and Rob Williams have clearly tapped into what Matt and company had set out for the Eleventh incarnation.  Though this story is not all about the Doctor being a clown as there are moments of sadness and isolation and there is also a very interesting moment in a door resulting in a blooded nose. Plus we finally get to see the swimming pool!

What is rather exciting in this comic book is the colours used by Gary Caldwell. It begins à la Wizard of Oz then this stark black and white is shattered with our rainbow dog; the art from Simon Caldwell is fast and hectic – though not a favourite of mine, it fits with the speed and pace of the comic and I can see why Simon was chosen for this story.

To echo my comment made over on my Tenth Doctor review, if you can hunt of the Alice X. Zhang cover do so; it looks so perfect and I would love to see a Doctor Who comic one day completed with her talents.

An good enjoyable romp from The Eleventh Doctor camp.  It’ll be good to see what future stories they have planned to see if they can find any meat for him to chew.

Villordsutch likes his sci-fi and looks like a tubby Viking according to his children. Visit his website and follow him on Twitter.
