Hans Zimmer and Benjamin Wallfisch scoring Blade Runner 2049

August 1, 2017 by Gary Collinson

With just a couple of months to go until the release of Blade Runner 2049, director Denis Villeneuve has revealed that composers Hans Zimmer and Benhamin Wallfisch have joined the project, and are collaborating with Villeneuve’s regular composer Johann Johannsson on the score to the sci-fi sequel.

“Johann Johansson composed the main theme as planned,” said Villeneuve (via The Playlist). “But, given the magnitude of the task, Benjamin Wallfisch and Hans Zimmer joined the team to help Johann. It’s hard to [follow original Blade Runner composer] Vangelis! We had some astonishing atmospheric [pieces] by Johann, but I needed other options, and Hans helped us.”

Wallfisch has recently worked with Zimmer on the scores for Hidden Figures and Dunkirk, while his other recent projects include A Cure For Wellness and It.

Thirty years after the events of the first film, a new blade runner, LAPD Officer K (Ryan Gosling), unearths a long-buried secret that has the potential to plunge what’s left of society into chaos. K’s discovery leads him on a quest to find Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), a former LAPD blade runner who has been missing for 30 years.

Blade Runner 2049 is set for release on October 6th and sees Harrison Ford reprising the role of Rick Deckard alongside Ryan Gosling, Ana de Armas, Sylvia Hoeks, Robin Wright, Mackenzie Davis, Carla Juri, Lennie James, Dave Bautista, Jared Leto and Edward James Olmos.
