Animation legend Hayao Miyazaki announces his retirement

It has been announced that Oscar-winning Japanese animation legend Hayao Miyazaki will retire from filmmaking following his next film The Wind Rises, with Studio Ghibli president Koju Hoshino revealing the news at the Venice Film Festival where The Wind Rises is screening in competition.

The co-founder of Studio Ghibli, Miyazaki’s illustrious career saw him winning the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature for Spirited Away, his first film after his previous short-lived retirement. His other directing credits include The Castle of Cagliostro, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, Castle in the Sky, My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki’s Delivery Service, Porco Rosso, Princess Mononoke, Howl’s Moving Castle and Ponyo.

The Wind Rises tells the story of Japanese fight aircraft designer Jiro Horikoshi and premiered in Japan this past July. It will receive its North American premiere this month at the Toronto International Film Festival, although official North American and UK release dates are yet to be announced. Here’s the trailer…
