The comic book crowd is not always the most easy to please. When creating an adaptation of a beloved comic book franchise, one is going up against — potentially — decades of history to be compared with. As a result, even the most open-minded of the fanbase can be pretty critical, often blessed with years of knowledge of the character/s in question. How do you compete with that? Well, you can’t. And director Patty Jenkins was well prepared for this fact prior to Wonder Woman’s release. Speaking to Superman (1978) director Richard Donner on The Directors Cut podcast, Jenkins speaks about mentally preparing for a potential backlash:
“But I went into the release of the movie assuming it would be, in best case, a mixed bag. And I sort of braced myself for it, where I thought, well, ‘Listen, you’re doing a beloved superhero; it’s always going to end up being at least 40%, oh you could have done, blah blah blah.’ So, the support and positivity that the movie has received, and also just the people wanting to talk about what we wanted to talk about in the movie and not other things, has been stunning.”
It also didn’t help that every DCEU movie released up until that point was (with the slight exception of Man of Steel) panned critically. Luckily, the rest is history and now Jenkins and Co. can look forward to the future with the already greenlit Wonder Woman 2.
