Alex Kurtzman to direct The Mummy reboot

July 31, 2014 by Scott J. Davis

Alex Kurtzman, screenwriter of Transformers, Star Trek and The Amazing Spider-Man 2, is in final contract talks with Universal to direct the new Mummy reboot, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The writer, who has penned some very big blockbusters over the past few years with former partner Roberto Orci , is already on board the reboot as a producer along with Chris Morgan. Kurtzman and Morgan have been entrusted with creating a shared cinematic universe for all of Universal’s big monster movie characters, and it looks like The Mummy will be first one to be seen, with a release date already set for April 2016.

Plot details are being kept under wraps, but THR reports that the new film is set in the present and is more action-adventure with horror elements than out-and-out horror. It will also feature new characters and not rehash previous incarnations, with directors Stephen Sommers (G.I. Joe) and Rob Cohen (XXX) having both worked on the modern versions.

Is Kurtzman the right man for the job? As always, leave us your comments below…
