Exclusive Interview – Ingrid Goes West director Matt Spicer

November 15, 2017 by Freda Cooper

For somebody who’s just directed a social media satire, Ingrid Goes West director Matt Spicer is surprisingly reticent when it comes to going online himself.

The film, which is released in the UK on Friday, follows the Ingrid (Aubrey Plaza) of the title as she “follows” and then essentially stalks an insta-celeb so she can be part of her seemingly perfect life.  It’s based on what Spicer regards as our love/hate relationship with social media, particularly Instagram – something that he uses himself, but mainly only to post photographs of his dog.

During his interview with Flickering Myth’s Freda Cooper, Spicer kept his phone very much in his pocket, instead talking about the darker side of the movie and how he shares a liking for Batman with another member of the cast.  And, while he does occasionally indulge in avocado on toast, he never posts about it.  Anywhere.

Ingrid Goes West arrives in UK cinemas on 17th November.  Read our review here.
