Justice League performing weaker than expected in the U.S., on course for second-lowest superhero movie opening of 2017

November 18, 2017 by Gary Collinson

We’ve seen on many occasions that box office tracking figures are often wide of the mark, usually underestimating a film’s opening weekend. However, it seems the opposite may be the case with Justice League, as Deadline is reporting that Warner Bros.’ latest DC blockbuster is on course for a lower-than-expected debut in North America.

According to the site, Justice League grossed $38.4 million on Friday, meaning that the superhero team-up is on course to gross around $93.5 million across the Friday-to-Sunday period – down from tracking estimates of between $110 million and $120 million.

Should Justice League fail to hit the $100 million mark, it would find itself with the second-lowest superhero movie opening of the year after Logan on $88 million. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 leads the way with $146.5 million, followed by Thor: Ragnarok on $122.7 million, Spider-Man: Homecoming on $117 million and Wonder Woman on $103.3 million.

Yesterday it was rumoured that Warner Bros. execs were concerned that Justice League would open lower than Marvel’s Thor: Ragnarok, and while that report may have just been pure speculation, a sub-$100 million debut for DC’s biggest property – and one with a $300 million plus price tag – is sure to be viewed as a major disappointment within the studio.

Of course, things could well pick up today and tomorrow, and there are still international numbers to come on top of domestic, so things may not seem quite so bleak when the final figures for the weekend are in.

Fueled by his restored faith in humanity and inspired by Superman’s selfless act, Bruce Wayne enlists the help of his newfound ally, Diana Prince, to face an even greater enemy. Together, Batman and Wonder Woman work quickly to find and recruit a team of metahumans to stand against this newly awakened threat. But despite the formation of this unprecedented league of heroes—Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg and The Flash—it may already be too late to save the planet from an assault of catastrophic proportions.

Justice League will reunite Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice stars Henry Cavill as Superman, Ben Affleck as Batman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Ray Fisher as Cyborg, Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Ezra Miller as The Flash, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Jeremy Irons as Alfred Pennyworth, Diane Lane as Martha Kent, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, Connie Nielsen as Queen Hippolyta and Robin Wright as General Antiope alongside J.K. Simmons (Whiplash) as Commissioner Gordon, Amber Heard (The Danish Girl) as Mera, Willem Dafoe (Spider-Man) as Vulko, Kiersey Clemons (Dope) as Iris West and Ciaran Hinds (Game of Thrones) as Steppenwolf.
