According to Variety, Logan director James Mangold has signed on to direct Elle Fanning (The Neon Demon) in an as-yet-untitled biopic of newspaper heiress Patty Hearst, who was kidnapped by the Symbionese Liberation Army, only to reemerge as a member of the terrorist group.
The project is based upon Jeffrey Toobin’s bestselling book American Heiress, and has been written by Mangold, Larry Karaszewski and Scott Alexander. It will reunite Mangold with 20th Century Fox, which is producing the project through its Fox 2000 label.
The film ““traces the audacious, kaleidoscopic and psychologically twisted story of a true-life Alice in Wonderland [and] will follow Hearst’s capture and two-year detainment by the Symbionese Liberation Army in the mid 1970’s, as well as her transition from hostage to warrior.”
Mangold has attached himself to a number of projects following the success of this year’s Logan, including a remake of Disorder, an adaptation of Don Winslow’s new novel The Force, an adaptation of Katherine Applegate’s children’s book Crenshaw, and an X-Men spinoff focussing on Dafne Keen’s Laura / X-23. However, the Patty Hearst biopic is now said to be his next feature.
