Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle passes $750 million worldwide

January 21, 2018 by Gary Collinson

Audiences may have been sceptical when the project was first announced, but Sony’s Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle has proven to be a runaway success at the box office, with the film pushing its worldwide haul to $767.8 million and counting.

Domestically, Jumanji held on to top spot for the third weekend in a row with $20 million, fending off competition from war drama 12 Strong ($16.5 million) and crime thriller Den of Thieves ($15.3 million), to pus its North American haul at $317 million. That’s the fifth highest of any Sony release, bettered only by the original Spider-Man films and Spider-Man: Homecoming.

Welcome to the Jungle is also demonstrating impressive staying power internationally, pushing its haul to $450 million from the international markets and holding on to top spot for the fourth consecutive weekend.

In the brand new adventure Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, the tables are turned as four teenagers in detention are sucked into the world of Jumanji.  When they discover an old video game console with a game they’ve never heard of, they are immediately thrust into the game’s jungle setting, into the bodies of their avatars, played by Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Kevin Hart, and Karen Gillan.  What they discover is that you don’t just play Jumanji –Jumanji plays you.  They’ll have to go on the most dangerous adventure of their lives, or they’ll be stuck in the game forever…

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle sees Jake Kasdan (Sex Tape) directing a cast that includes Dwayne Johnson (The Fate of the Furious), Kevin Hart (Central Intelligence), Jack Black (Goosebumps), Karen Gillan (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2), Rhys Darby (Hunt for the Wilderpeople), Nick Jonas (Scream Queens), Alex Wolff (The Sitter), Madison Iseman (Still the King), Morgan Turner (Remember Me) and Ser’Darius Blain (Star Trek Into Darkness).
