Assassin’s Creed movie pushed back to 2016

September 19, 2014 by Luke Owen

With the news of a Deadpool movie hitting cinemas in 2016, 20th Century Fox have also announced that their adaptation of popular game franchise Assassin’s Creed is being pushed back to a pretty stacked 2016.

Assassin’s Creed was set for release on August 7th 2015, but insiders say that the movie simply will not be ready in time. Like a lot of video game adaptaions, the movie is now going through several re-writes and the production is struggling with scheduling issues.

In its place will be Josh Trank’s The Fantastic Four reboot, which seems to be taking a leaf from Marvel’s playbook of taking advantage of the supposed “dead” August release month. In the past, August was a dumping ground as the summer blockbuster season comes to an end, but the success of Guardians of the Galaxy has shown that the lack of competition can prove success for tentpole movies.

Assassin’s Creed, which was set to have Michael Fassbender (X-Men: Days of Future Past) in the lead role, no longer has a release date and is now just pencilled in for 2016. Its set to be directed by Justin Kurzel (Macbeth) and has scripts written by writing duo Bill Collage and Adam Cooper (The Transporter Legacy) and Michael Lesslie (Macbeth). The series of games have been recieved well by gamers and critics and have sold over 73 million copies as of April 2014.
