Mary Jane Watson not in Amazing Spider-Man 2, pushed back to third movie

June 19, 2013 by admin

It was announced a couple of days ago that The Amazing Spider-Man was moving into parts 3 and 4 over the next few years (2016 and 2018) and with its ever growing cast of characters for The Amazing Spider-Man 2, it seems one of them has been pushed back to the third part – Mary Jane Watson.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Shailene Woodley spoke about the decision: “Of course I’m bummed,” said the actress. “But I’m a firm believer in everything happening for a specific reason….based on the proposed plot, I completely understand holding off on introducing [Mary Jane] until the next film.”

I’m sure all those nerds who felt she wasn’t “hot” enough to play the part will be a little bit happy about this news.

It’s amazing to think that the first images we got from The Amazing Spider-Man 2 were of Mary Jane, and now all of her scenes are being cut. One has to wonder what’s going on behind closed doors at Sony and whether external (money driven) forces are stepping into Mark Webb’s sequel.

What are your thoughts on Mary Jane being cut, and what do we think this “proposed plot” is?

UPDATE: According to The Hollywood Reporter, “it is likely that Woodley will not return [for The Amazing Spider-Man 3] and that the part will be recast”.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is set for release next year and will feature Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy, Jamie Foxx as Max Dillon/Electro, Dane DeHann as Harry Osborn, Chris Cooper as Norman Osborn, Paul Giamati as Aleksei Sytsevich/The Rhino, Sally Fields as Aunt May and Colm Feore as Adrian Toomes/The Vulture.
