Ryan Coogler isn’t concerned about the Black Panther Rotten Tomatoes review trolls

February 4, 2018 by Gary Collinson

A few days ago it was revealed that a group of anti-Disney DC “fans” had launched a Facebook event urging its followers to flood Rotten Tomatoes with negative reviews for Marvel’s Black Panther in an effort to give the superhero blockbuster a “rotten” audience score.

Facebook has since removed the page, while Rotten Tomatoes also hit out at the group, threatening to ban any users who engage in such activities, and now The Huffington Post has managed to get a few words from Black Panther director Ryan Coogler about his thoughts on the situation, with the filmmaker responding diplomatically that:

“For me, I’m looking forward to everybody seeing the film. I’m really looking forward to sharing the film with audiences regardless of what their political views are…that’s kind of where I stand. [Rotten Tomatoes] can be an oversimplification of what critics are saying about a movie. It’s quicker to look at the consensus than it is to read the articles. But I’m a person who definitely respects film criticism and draws on it in the filmmaking process.”

Black Panther has been earning rave reviews from critics so far, so it remains to be seen whether this anti-Disney group will have any kind of impact on the film’s RT score once audiences begin casting their votes, or if they’ll find something better to do in the next couple of weeks.

After the events of Captain America: Civil War, King T’Challa returns home to the reclusive, technologically advanced African nation of Wakanda to serve as his country’s new leader. However, T’Challa soon finds that he is challenged for the throne from factions within his own country. When two foes conspire to destroy Wakanda, the hero known as Black Panther must team up with C.I.A. agent Everett K. Ross and members of the Dora Milaje, Wakandan special forces, to prevent Wakanda from being dragged into a world war.

Black Panther sees Ryan Coogler (Creed) directing Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa alongside Lupita Nyong’o as Nakia, Michael B. Jordan as Erik Killmonger, Danai Gurira as Okoye, Winston Duke as M’Baku, Forest Whitaker as Zuri, Daniel Kaluuya as W’Kabi, Angela Bassett as Ramonda, Florence Kasumba as Ayo, Martin Freeman as Everett Ross, Andy Serkis as Ulysses Klaue, Letitia Wright as Shuri, Sterling K. Brown as N’Jobu, JoOhn Kani as King T’Chaka and Nabiyah Be as Nightshade. The film is set for release on February 12th in the UK and on February 16th in the States.
