Comic Book Review – The Walking Dead #111

June 11, 2013 by admin

Villordsutch reviews The Walking Dead #111….

“Lucille is going to be so jealous.”

The more I read of The Walking Dead the more I wish I started reading from issue #1 and also before I clapped eyes on the television series – not that the TV series is overly bad, it’s just not this good.

Flowing straight on from issue #110  our story continues with Rick and company taking shelter with the survivors at “The Kingdom” with Ezekiel (plus tiger) as they are currently pooling people to take down the The Saviors, a well-organised group of “Ne’er-do-wells” ran by a Sociopath called Negan.  Negan is currently paying a visit to the Alexandria Safe Zone to await Ricks return, and in the process he finds a friend with a pool table.

The above paragraph may be a rather be a glib description of the comic book as this is a full, well written story that makes you feel your money is wisely spent.   I’m glad that I have had the chance to read it and I’m left feeling that I want more.  Robert Kirkman (Invincible, Irredeemable Ant-Man) has a gift and I’m glad that he is sharing his zombie/survivor tales with us.  He has the knack to end a comic and leave you with the craving for it to continue.

A lot praise also goes to the art of the book from the pencils and inks from Charlie Adlard (Mars Attacks!, The Hellfire Club) to the colouring from Cliff Rathburn (Reaper, Brit).  The look and feel of the comic initially comes across as basic compared to the big name comics around (Batman, Superman etc.), but then as you read you find it fascinating as the background is filled with subtle details which make the images move and feel more real; look at the malevolent shadows falling across faces or piles of rubbish in the streets.  It’s fantastic.

I’m enjoying The Walking Dead so much I am toying with taking a trip to the city and buying the graphic novels from a real life comic shop, like I used to do 18 years ago.

Looking forward to issue #112.
