Hidden Super Smash Bros 3DS files possibly reveal unused features

October 10, 2014 by Tom Powter

Audio files have been discovered in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and they seem to reveal unused modes. The voiceover clips are those of the announcer and they seem to indicate that there were once plans to include an eight-player mode, amongst other modes.

The voice over files include a Tournament mode (called Tourney), Boss Battles (like were found in Brawl), Event Match and 8-Player Smash, being the most interesting of the files. Boss Battles is certainly a peculiar one, as that would indicate some kind of adventure mode – of which there isn’t any in the 3DS version. Event Matches are also a disappointing omission from the game, as they were one of Brawl’s strongest solo modes. 8-Player Smash however is truly intriguing. Considering director Masahiro Sakurai cut the Ice Climbers from the game because they couldn’t work on the 3DS, it seems unlikely this mode was intended for the portable game.

So what could this mean? Well, it could be that these files were all originally going to make it into the game, but were cut. Or, they all denote upcoming DLC. Perhaps more likely though is that each of these will feature on the Wii U version. Still, how one would manage an eight player match is beyond me.
