US Box Office Report – Gone Girl makes it two weeks at the top of the chart

October 13, 2014 by Luke Owen

Your US Box Office Report for w/c 13th October 2014…

After just squeaking a victory over Annabelle last week, David Fincher’s Gone Girl has made it two weeks at the top of the US box office, beating out new releases Dracula Untold and Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day. But while its all smiles for Fincher, Gravity stormed the top of the charts with $43.1 million at the same point last year…

Dropping 28.6% from last week, Gone Girl still brought in $26.8 million to bring its domestic total to $78.2 million. With its worldwide total not far behind at $62.1 million, Gone Girl is sitting very happily with a $140.3 million total. While the opening weekend was a record breaker for Fincher, Gone Girl currently sits behind The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Seven, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Social Network, Panic Room and Alien3 for an all-time career best. Time will tell if it can beat The Curious Case of Benjamin Button‘s $333 million, but it seems unlikely. Listen to our podcast review of Gone Girl below:

Despite the mediocre reviews, Dracula Untold, starring Luke Evans, did fairly well all things considered. The supposed first step in the Universal Monsters Expanded Universe, Dracula Untold took $23.4 million over the weekend. While this may seem bad against its $70 million budget, the movie has already taken $62.2 million worldwide, so its not all doom and gloom.

Other new release Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day did very well with a $19.1 million gate. The family comedy cost around $28 million, so it looks like this should make its money back.

It looks like all the bad reviews for Annabelle has had somewhat of an effect as it had the biggest drop this week of 55.9%, taking $16.3 million. But with a worldwide total of $122 million against a $6 million budget, we don’t think Warner Bros. will be too upset. And while it took a big drop against Dracula Untold and Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day, it did beat out fellow newcomer The Judge starring Robert Downey Jr., which took a very disappointing $13.3 million on its opening weekend.

In other box office news, after 11 weeks, Guardians of the Galaxy has dropped out of the top 10. However, its record breaking opening in China (under the bizarre name of Interplanetary Unusual Attacking Team) has brought its worldwide total to $687 million.

Here’s your top 10 and their domestic totals:

  |Title| |Weekend| |Total| |Wk(s)|
1 Gone Girl $26.8 million $78.2 million 2
2 Dracula Untold $23.4 million $23.4 million 1
3 Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day $19.1 million $19.1 million 1
4 Annabelle $16.3 million $62.1 million 2
5 The Judge $13.3 million $13.1 million 1
6 The Equalizer $9.7 million $79.8 million 3
7 Addicted $7.6 million $7.6 million 1
8 The Maze Runner $7.5 million $83.4 million 4
9 The Boxtrolls $6.6 million $41 million 3
10 Left Behind $2.9 million $10.9 million 2

Last year’s number one – Gravity ($43 million)
