PS4 smashes expectations as sales rise to 13.5m

November 3, 2014 by Tom Powter

The Playstation 4 continues to absolutely dominate the next-generation landscape, with sales of the console having risen to a massive 13.5 million.

During the July to September quarter, Sony managed to shift 3.3 million units. Despite the summer months generally being tough on gaming, this quarter was Sony’s second best for the PS4, beating out the January to March sales of 3 million and the April to June sales of 2.7 million.

The machine’s performance is defying Sony’s expectations. Game income for the quarter rose to $195 million, while Sony increased its full-year targets by $89 million.

However, it’s far from being all good news for Sony. The PS Vita continues to perform badly, with Sony merging its quarterly sales with the PSP and Playstation TV – even together, they only managed 700,000 units for the quarter.

While the corporation lost $806 million in the quarter, Sony have said that strong PS4 sales meant the revenue for the whole business managed to climb 7.2%.
