X-Men: Apocalypse will focus on Magneto and Mystique’s relationship

November 14, 2014 by Gavin Logan

With production due to start April 2015, details of the upcoming Bryan Singer directed X-Men: Apocalypse have been fairly scarce. Other than casting rumours – and without delving too deep into the comic-books – there hasn’t been a lot to go on in terms of where the plot will go. This can be seen as a good thing because revealing too much information too early can sometimes actually end up being damning. However after the huge success of X-Men: Days of Future Past it’s safe to say that we all are extremely eager to find out any new plot details and now we have something to work with.

According to a source close to THR who has seen the finished script, X-Men: Apocalypse will “take full advantage of Lawrence’s and Fassbender’s star power, placing Mystique and Magneto’s romance front and centre.”

Back in early October, screenwriter Simon Kinberg confirmed that X-Men: Apocalypse would be “the close of the trilogy for those First Class characters” so it makes perfect sense to tune into the relationship between two of the main characters from the previous two films. He also stated that it was “a completion of the arc for them”. However in the same interview he did mention that Mystique and Beast’s relationship was “a really interesting one that we didn’t have a lot of time to explore in Days of Future Past, so we’ll have an opportunity to do more with that in Apocalypse.”

This new plot revelation doesn’t necessarily contradict with what Kinberg said back in October as Beast could still very much be apart in helping to shape the already dynamic relationship between Magneto and Mystique. Considering that Apocalypse will serve as a sort of prequel to the already existing X-Men movies it seems necessary to sway Mystique towards the darker side of the mutant race. If Days of Future Past is anything to go by then we can expect a hellavu lot of mouth watering “teases” from Singer before and during the production process.
