Marvel wanted Spider-Man for Captain America: Civil War, Sony approached Sam Raimi about returning to the Spidey franchise

December 10, 2014 by Gary Collinson

The hack into Sony Pictures has revealed some interesting details about the studios plans – or lack of – for its Spider-Man franchise as it looks to shake-up the property following the negative response to this year’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2. According to The Wall Street Journal, leaked emails have revealed:

– Extensive discussions between Sony and Walt Disney, with Sony Pictures president Doug Belgrand suggesting that Marvel could produce a new trilogy of Spider-Man movies with Sony retaining “creative control, marketing and distribution.”

– Amy Pascal revealing that Marvel Studios wanted Spider-Man to appear in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War, although talks broke down between the two parties, leading Sony to push ahead with its own Spider-Man slate.

– Pascal also approached Sam Raimi, director of the the first three Spider-Man movies, about a potential return to the franchise, either as director or producer.

– A “Spidey Summit” is reportedly set for January to discuss future Spider-Man plans, including an animated Spider-Man comedy from producers Chris Miller and Phil Lord (The LEGO Movie).

So, interesting stuff indeed, and it certainly looks like The Sinister Six, The Amazing Spider-Man 3, Venom: Carnage and the female-led spin-off are all up in the air at the moment.

How would you like to see Sony proceed with its Spider-Man franchise, and are you disappointed that a deal couldn’t be reached to see Spidey as part of Civil War?
