Dwayne Johnson talks Black Adam’s “phenomenal opportunity”, could shoot in 2019

April 11, 2018 by Ricky Church

With production on Shazam! in full swing, one question many fans have had is when Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson will finally star as Shazam’s nemesis, Black Adam, in the Black Adam solo film.

Johnson has had a very busy schedule from filming Jumangi: Welcome to the Jungle, Skyscraper and the upcoming Fast & Furious spin-off with Jason Statham and other projects that Black Adam seems to be nowhere on his schedule yet. Now, however, Johnson has offered a fresh update.

Speaking with Yahoo! for Rampage, Johnson was asked about the project and when we might see it. “The script came in, it’s great, we’re working on it,” Johnson said. “If things come together in the way we anticipate them coming together, that feels like a 2019 movie in production.”

Johnson also spoke about being part of the grander DC Extended Universe and how he hopes Black Adam will fit in with the other films in the series that match their tone.  “Its a challenging thing because when Marvel is doing such an incredible job of universe building and building out and DC is doing a great job in finding the footing and tone of their movies, certainly with Wonder Woman for example. I look forward to James Wan’s movie that’s coming out with Aquaman.”

“So Black Adam is this phenomenal opportunity for us to nail the tone, make sure he’s badass, make sure we’re serving the mythology properly, but also making sure that we can have intrinsic DNA tied to a lot of other properties in DC,” he continued. “It’s always – It’s not an easy thing to do, but I think we’re going to nail it. Fingers crossed to all the Black Adam fans out there that its looking like 2019.”

It has previously been rumoured Johnson could cameo in Shazam!, but there’s been no official word either way whether Johnson will appear or not. Hopefully the stars align for Johnson and his prediction of a 2019 start date for Black Adam will come to fruition.
