Guillermo del Toro planning the DC Comics team-up Heaven Sent

November 2, 2012 by admin

Now that Christopher Nolan’s Batman saga has come to an end with the release of The Dark Knight Rises this past July, the future of Warner Bros.’ stable of DC Comics properties looks a little uncertain. Next year, Nolan, screenwriter David S. Goyer and director Zack Snyder will reboot Superman with the hotly-anticipated Man of Steel, while the studio also has a live-action Lobo adaptation in the works from director Brad Peyton (Journey 2: The Mysterious Island), not to mention the long-rumoured superhero team-up Justice League.

However, if the folks at Latino Review are to be believed, Justice League may not be the first DC Comics ensemble to reach the screen, with Guillermo del Toro (Blade II, Hellboy) apparently keen to do his own ‘supernatural’ version of The Avengers, “combining all the magical beings from DC Comics in one epic adventure.” Entitled Heaven Sent, the proposed project is said to feature the likes of Deadman, Etrigan the Demon, Hellblazer, Phantom Stranger, Sargon the Sorcerer, The Spectre, Swamp Thing, Zatanna and Zatara, with Warner Bros.’ lawyers currently working to ensure the studio has the necessary rights to all of the characters.

Guillermo del Toro is currently putting the finishing touches to his epic kaiju homage Pacific Rim, which is due for release on July 12th, 2013, and he also has a number of other projects on his upcoming slate, including an adaptation of Pinocchio, the long-rumoured sequel Hellboy 3, and the seemingly-going-nowhere Marvel TV series The Incredible Hulk. According to Latino Review, Heaven Sent still looks to be some time away from production, so let’s hope this one doesn’t go the same way as the umpteen other projects del Toro has abandoned over the years…
