ABC president defends ratings for Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Agent Carter

January 15, 2015 by Gary Collinson

Much like sister show Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., ABC’s latest Marvel offering Agent Carter isn’t quite managing to replicate the runaway success of its big screen counterparts in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with the show slumping to a 1.5 rating and 5.1 million viewers with Tuesday’s third episode ‘Time and Tide’ [read our review here]. However, ABC President Paul Lee isn’t quite ready to declare the two shows a failure, despite lower than expected viewing figures.

“We feel very optimistic about [Agent Carter’s ratings]. S.H.I.E.L.D. is actually a great and powerful show for us, [it’s 18-49 demo rating with seven days of DVR playback playback] pops up to a 3.0, it brings in a male audience for us and it’s creatively really strong now. We left a great cliffhanger at the end of Christmas and now it’s going to come back with some fantastic storylines. And to have Agent Carter in the [S.H.I.E.L.D. hiatus] gap doing sort of double what we were doing there last year is great for us.”

Asked if ABC felt any pressure from parent company Disney to keep airing a Marvel title as opposed to other programming, Lee was adamant that isn’t the case, and revealed that the network has further plans to explore the MCU: “Nope, [no pressure] at all. This is us. We drive this. We have ambitions for Marvel in the future. We love Marvel.”
