Last year, Digital Spy interviewed director Joss Whedon on the set of Avengers: Age of Ultron about his thoughts on the Marvel Cinematic Universe and its lack of diversity. In the interview, Whedon said that it was “sexism” and “quiet misogyny” that was holding Marvel back from pulling the trigger on female-led superhero movies in particular. The interview was posted in full earlier this week.
In the months since his comments were initially made, Marvel have announced Captain Marvel and Black Panther for Phase Three, which has promoted Whedon to clarify his Digital Spy comments.
“I just thought, I sounded very harsh,” Whedon told Buzzfeed. “And then [Marvel announced], ‘We’re going to make Captain Marvel. We’re going to make Black Panther. We’re going to shake it up.’ I was just like, great! Now I just sound mean and bitter. But, you know, there’s a lot to be mean and bitter about.”
