Charlie Cox gives his thoughts on the Ben Affleck Daredevil movie; talks Daredevil’s powers

February 4, 2015 by admin

Yesterday we got a brief look at Marvel and Netflix’s Daredevil ahead of the full trailer landing later on today. In an interview with the Scratch the Surface Podcast (via CBM), Charlie Cox (who will be playing the titular role) spoke out about the 2003 Daredevil movie starring Ben Affleck as well as how they will be portraying his powers in the new show.

“I thought it was fun at times,” Cox said of the 2003 movie. “I just don’t think to make that movie in that tone suits Daredevil, it doesn’t really work for that character and that world.”

In the 2003 movie, Daredevil’s radar senses was depicted by a blue-tint “sound vision”, not too dissimilar to Frank Miller’s vision during his run on the comic (albeit a different colour).

“We had to adapt certain things for the purpose of story telling,” Cox said about the show’s version of Daredevil’s powers. “Like for example, and I’m making this up so there are no spoilers here, there is a scene where I come into the room, and lets say there are guns all over the floor on one side of the room and drugs on the other side of the room. Im just making this up, I promise I’m just making this up. So lets say that’s the scene. I come into the room, and I [Daredevil] can pick up on those things, based on a combination of his senses, smell, gunpowder in the air, taste of cocaine in the air or whatever, he can sense those things. But you can’t tell that story on camera without having a camera move that goes to them. Daredevil wouldn’t need to look in that direction in order to sense those objects, but the camera needs to. So we had to come up with a way where he has to focus on things in order to kind of sense them, and by focusing he kind of cocks his head towards what it is he’s trying to get a sense of, trying to kind of create an image in his mind of what it is, so we can tell that story.”

Marvel’s Daredevil is a live action series that follows the journey of attorney Matt Murdock, who in a tragic accident was blinded as a boy but imbued with extraordinary senses. Murdock sets up practice in his old neighborhood of Hell’s Kitchen, New York where he now fights against injustice as a respected lawyer by day and masked vigilante at night.

Daredevil sees Charlie Cox (Stardust) leading the cast as Matt Murdoch/Daredevil alongside Deborah Ann Woll (True Blood) as Karen Page, Elden Henson (The Butterfly Effect) as Foggy Nelson, Vincent D’Onofrio (Law & Order: Criminal Intent) as the Kingpin, Scott Glenn (The Silence of the Lambs) as Stick, Peter Shinkoda (Falling Skies) as Hachiro, Rosario Dawson (Sin City: A Dame to Kill For) as Claire Temple / Night Nurse, Toby Moore (John Wick) as Wesley, Ayelet Zurer (Man of Steel) as Vanessa, Vondie Curtis-Hall (Chicago Hope) as Ben Urich and Bob Gunton (The Shawshank Redemption) as Leland Owlsley / The Owl.
