Jupiter Ascending falters at the box office while The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water makes a huge splash

February 8, 2015 by admin

As many predicted (including ourselves in our own review), Jupiter Ascending has faltered at the global box office on its debut weekend, taking just $51 million worldwide.

The film, written and directed by The Wachowskis, opened in around 65 territories and cost a whopping $175 million to make, but only managed to take a pitiful $19 million domestically, with the rest being made up from the foreign taking. So low were its takings that it couldn’t upseat American Sniper ($24.1 million), which drops to second after seven weeks in the US box office.

This echos the disappointing taking of Edge of Tomorrow from last year, also released by Warner Bros.

On the flip side of that, The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water made a huge splash with around $56 million domestically. The part-animated, part-live action movie added an extra $26 million from its foreign takings, giving it a grand total of $82 million worldwide.
