Comic Book Review – Creature Cops: Special Varmint Unit #2

February 26, 2015 by Villordsutch

Villordsutch reviews Creature Cops: Special Varmint Unit #2…

A pack of griffins is on the loose and tearing up the city—and that’s the least of the problems for this band of misfit animal cops! A dead (human) body has veteran officer Kaminski on the trail of a hybrid animal fighting ring… that might just be related to a ten-year-old cold case that nearly ended Kaminski’s career—and life!

With a Bull-bear murder being handed to the odd lives of the Special Varmint Unit, and a flight of Griffins – having been somehow designed – attacking Kaminski and Vasquez, the average day of stray Panda-dogs or Horned-mastiffs has gone completely out of the window.  Things continue to get even more hectic as we’re introduced to a sports star who may be involved in murders and a Cthulhu like being in the basement of a religious cult leaders home.

It’s fair to say there is a lot going on in issue #2 of Creature Cops: SVU #2, and it also may be fair to say there is too much going on in #2 as well.  Unfortunately I do understand way all the fun is being thrown at us. We’re looking at a three-part miniseries and Rob Anderson and Fernando Melek want people to enjoy themselves; as quickly as possible. As last month I complained there wasn’t that much going on, perhaps this month there is too much going on.  Perhaps Creature Cops would have been better spread over four issues thus letting issue #2 bleed into #3, as this – all be it exciting and different – unfortunately borders on confusing.

Still this all being said, Rob Anderson (writer) and Fernando Melek (artist) have given us something original and I am finding this a very intriguing read, I want to know where this is going and I also would like to know more of this world they’ve created.  I just wish they had a little bit more breathing room to share their world so it wasn’t all so crammed into one small space.

Villordsutch likes his sci-fi and looks like a tubby Viking according to his children. Visit his website and follow him on Twitter.
