Star Wars writer Gary Whitta trying to get The Last Starfighter remake off the ground

March 2, 2015 by admin

Star Wars spin-off writer Gary Whitta is currently in demand as a filmmaker, but the one thing he is keen on is getting a remake of The Last Starfighter off the ground.

Now Whitta isn’t the first man to attempt this. Seth Rogen was looking to get a remake of the 1984 cult movie written by Jonathan R. Betuel and directed by Nick Castle. Sadly for Rogen, the rights to The Last Starfighter were not for sale. Rogen tried for years and would eventually lament his pains to Steven Spielberg, who tried to convince Betuel to give up the rights but he wouldn’t budge. And if Steven Spielberg can’t get the rights, then who even has a chance?

There was a rumour back in 2008 that The Last Starfighter was heading for a sequel when a script was doing the rounds simply titled Starfighter. All indications were that it was centered around the son of Alex Rogan and the surviving actors from the original movie would be reprising their roles. Being that it’s 7 years later, it’s likely that nothing ever came of it. But that hasn’t stopped the dreams of Gary Whitta.

“Man, I wish,” he told /Film about a Last Starfighter remake. “I’m one of a very long list of screenwriters who would kill for the opportunity to bring that back. It just seems like the rights are impossible to figure out. Maybe one day. If there’s one thing that movie taught me, it’s to never stop believing that anything is possible. Even in Hollywood.”

Would you like to see a remake of The Last Starfighter?
