Idris Elba tops Fox’s shortlist to replace Hugh Jackman as Wolverine‏

April 1, 2015 by Gary Collinson

Originally published April 1, 2015. Updated April 13, 2018.

Despite stating earlier in the month that he hoped to play the character “until he dies”, Hugh Jackman revealed last week that he’s set to hang up the claws as the fan favourite mutant Logan following next year’s follow-up to The Wolverine.

Having been a mainstay of the X-Men franchise since the first movie in 2000, Fox now faces the unenviable task of finding a replacement for Jackman in what has become his signature role. However, the studio seems to be wasting little time in embarking on the hunt, with a shortlist of actors emerging online.

According to reports, Idris Elba is said to be the number one choice to succeed Jackman as the adamantium-clawed mutant, with the British star leading a shortlist which also includes Chris Pine, Ryan Gosling, Robert Pattinson, Zac Efron, Dan Stevens and Bryan Cranston. Tom Hardy was also mentioned as a potential candidate, but it’s said there’s some concern inside the studio that The Dark Knight Rises star may be too short for the role.

Elba has also been earmarked as a possible replacement for James Bond once Daniel Craig decides to call it a day as 007, and while there’s certainly plenty of support for his casting as the super spy, it remains to be seen whether fans will accept him as Wolverine, particularly after the backlash against Michael B. Jordan’s casting as The Human Torch in The Fantastic Four.

Would you like to see Idris Elba as Wolverine, and if not, who is your pick to replace Hugh Jackman?
