Memorable Star Wars Moments #7 – The Binary Sunset

September 5, 2011 by admin

With Star Wars: The Complete Saga arriving on Blu-ray this month, Gary Collinson counts down his most memorable Star Wars moments (check out the previous entry here)…

STAR WARS: EPISODE IV – A NEW HOPE

EXT. TATOONE – LARS HOMESTEAD

The giant twin suns of Tatooine slowly disappear behind a distant dune range. Luke stands watching them for a few moments, then reluctantly enters the domed entrance to the homestead.

With that simple passage from the screenplay for Star Wars, George Lucas went on to craft one of the most iconic scenes in cinema history as Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) gazes out towards the stars while the twin suns settle on his home planet of Tatooine. Much like the Binary Sunset greeted his arrival at the conclusion of Episode III, so too will it mark Luke’s departure as dawn brings forth the adventure he so desperately craves and sees the son of Anakin Skywalker embark upon his first steps into a larger world.

As is so often the case with Star Wars, the scene is enhanced immeasurably by the work of composer John Williams, whose stirring Force Theme makes the perfect accompaniment to the visuals of the Binary Sunset.

The Binary Sunset….

Proceed to the next memorable Star Wars moment here.
