Adrienne Barbeau, Giancarlo Esposito and Tobin Bell cast in Creepshow pilot ‘Gray Matter’

April 6, 2019 by Gary Collinson

Shudder has kicked off casting for its upcoming Creepshow horror anthology series, with Adrienne Barbeau – who starred in the original 1982 movie – set to appear in the first episode of the series alongside Giancarlo Esposito (Better Call Saul) and Tobin Bell (Saw).

The debut episode will adapt Stephen King’s short story Gray Matter, published in his 1978 collection Night Shift, and has showrunner Greg Nicotero (The Walking Dead) attached to direct from a script by Byron Willinger and Philip de Blasi (The Commuter).

“I feel I’m in great company getting the opportunity to direct a story written by Steve,” said Nicotero. “Between Salem’s Lot, Pet Sematary and The Stand, I’ve always found his stories rich in relatable characters forced into supernatural situations beyond their control — the everyday person’s primal fears. To visualize ‘Gray Matter‘ for Creepshow with the help of Adrienne, Giancarlo and Tobin was about as good as it gets for a horror fan from Pittsburgh.”

“I was thrilled when Greg asked me to join the Creepshow world once again,” said Barbeau, who appeared in ‘The Crate‘ segment of the 1982 film. “And then working with Tobin and Giancarlo, with Greg as our director, well, that was the icing on the cake — no, not that cake. Oh, you know what I mean.”

Creepshow is based upon the original anthology horror film from director George A. Romero and writer Stephen King, and will feature two segments per episode. The show is slated to premiere on the horror streaming service later this year.
