All hope may not be lost for Luca Guadagnino’s Sgt. Rock DC movie

June 25, 2025 by EJ Moreno

If you were one of those who were eagerly awaiting Luca Guadagnino’s first foray into superhero filmmaking, but were devastated by the news that Sgt. Rock was potentially cancelled, don’t give up hope yet.

It seems like the Sgt. Rock project is not dead in the water, but it is experiencing a delay in production to focus on the creative side. DC Studios chief James Gunn spoke with EW recently and teased that the film might still happen.

“I feel like we’re in a pretty good place. We’re still moving forward, but it’s not going to be…What would Peter [Safran] want me to say here? … So it’s still moving forward, but, yeah, right now it wasn’t exactly where I wanted it to be creatively, and so it needs to change a little bit.”

Little was confirmed about the film, but it was rumored that the story would have followed a race to find the mystical Spear of Destiny before the Nazis retrieve it. The Sgt. Rock character has already appeared in the DCU, showing up in a flashback in the Creature Commandos episode “Cheers to the Tin Man”, voiced by Maury Sterling.

Sgt. Rock would have starred Colin Farrell, playing the titular WW2 hero, with Jeremy Allen White, Mike Faist, and David Jonsson in supporting roles. Justin Kuritzkes penned the film, and composers Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross were also attached. The film was supposed to begin production this July.
