Amazon orders live-action Blade Runner series from Ridley Scott and Alcon Entertainment

February 12, 2022 by Gary Collinson

Last year Ridley Scott revealed that, in addition to the upcoming Alien TV show at Hulu, he was also working on bringing another of his iconic sci-fi films to the small screen with a Blade Runner TV show, and now comes word that Amazon has granted a ten-episode order for a live-action show set within the Blade Runner universe.

Titled Blade Runner 2099 and described as a follow-up to Denis Villeneuve’s Blade Runner 2049, the live-action series has Silka Luisa (Shining Girls) attached as showrunner, while Scott will executive produce through his Scott Free Productions alongside Blade Runner 2049 writer Michael Green, Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson of Alcon Entertainment.

Plot details for the ten episode series are being kept under wraps, but as the title reveals, it will take place 50 years after Blade Runner 2049, and 80 years after Ridley Scott’s original film.

Alcon Entertainment acquired the rights to Blade Runner back in 2011, and while 2017’s Blade Runner 2049 failed to set the box office alight, the company has continued to tell ‘in-canon’ stories through various comic book titles at Titan Comics, as well as the recent Blade Runner: Black Lotus anime series from Adult Swim and Crunchyroll.
