Ant-Man shrinks as Cocaine Bear gets high at the box office

February 27, 2023 by Matt Rodgers

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania might have stayed atop the U.S. box-office in it’s sophomore frame with $32.2 million, but Universal’s Cocaine Bear inflicted quite the bump with it’s own impressive opening.

Ant-Man 3‘s 69.7% drop was the worst second-week decline for an entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, stealing that unwanted title from 2021’s Black Widow, which took a 67.8% hit, but had a global pandemic and same-day digital release to contend with. Unfortunately the hits keep on coming for Quantumania, because it also took the award for the largest drop of any superhero film opening to $100 million or more from Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which tumbled 69.1% in 2016.

As it stands Ant-Man 3 has taken its domestic tally to $167.3 million, with an additional $196.3 million internationally, for a worldwide gross that currently stands at $363.6 million. You can blame the fall-off on poor word-of-mouth, middling reviews, or even that oft-banded term ‘superhero-fatigue’, but it’s clear that a certain coked-up bear will have taken a chunk out of the Marvel money.

Universal’s Elizabeth Banks directed high-concept comedy Cocaine Bear out-performed expectations to post a debut of $23.1 million. The well-received bear on a bender caper (read our review ★★★★ here) also posted $5.3 million overseas for a budget-surpassing first weekend global tally of $28.4 million. Expect Hollywood writing rooms this Monday morning to be full of whiteboards with “Speed Turtle” or “Crack Cow” written on them.

Elsewhere there was a notable opening for the prayer-pound, with faith-based film Jesus Revolution rising from nowhere to take $15.5 million (read our ★★ review here).
