With Aquaman tracking a $100 million five-day domestic opening and looking likely to score a box office victory over Mary Poppins Returns and Bumblebee during the Christmas period, it seems that Warner Bros. and DC Films are confident that they have a hit on their hands – so much so that they’re already thinking about a sequel to the aquatic superhero adventure.
According to a report over at THR (via Collider), Warner Bros. Pictures Group Chairman Toby Emmerich is said to have been given “enough confidence to begin talks on a sequel” to the film, which sees Justice League star Jason Momoa returning to the title role. However, it appears that talks are still in the early stage, and as yet there isn’t so much as a writer attached to the potential follow-up.
While it’s clearly early days on a sequel, and Aquaman obviously still has to deliver at the box office, it’s certainly refreshing that Warner Bros. has confidence in the film. Usually, at this stage in the DC release cycle we’re being swamped by rumours that Warner Bros. is terrified it has a disaster on its hands and is scrambling blindly through the edit bay trying to “salvage” the film.

Aquaman is directed by James Wan (The Conjuring) and stars Jason Momoa as the titular hero, reprising his role from Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League, along with Amber Heard as Mera, Patrick Wilson as Ocean Master, Willem Dafoe as Dr. Vulko, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Black Manta, Dolph Lundgren as King Nereus, Nicole Kidman as Atlanna, Temuera Morrison as Tom Curry, Ludi Lin as Murk, Michael Beach as Jesse Kane, Djimon Hounsou as the Fisherman King, Randall Park as Dr. Stephen Shin, Otis Dhanji as a young Arthur Curry, Julie Andrews as Karathen and Graham McTavish in an as-yet-unrevealed role. It is set for release on December 14th in the UK and December 21st in North America.
