Jigsaw
Release Date: October 26th
What is it: The eighth movie in the popular Saw franchise.
Why it might be good: The Saw franchise as a whole is fairly poor, but that isn’t to say there are not good entries. When it is on form, the franchise can supply an audience with plenty of enjoyable cheap thrills and enjoyable jump scares.
Why it might be bad: The Saw franchise had become tedious by the end of its lengthy run – bogged down with exposition and overly reliant on the same old scare tactics. Nobody really wanted the franchise to return and there is a fair chance that this might absolutely stink.
Thor: Ragnarok
Release Date: October 27th
What is it: The third movie in the Thor franchise and the latest addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Why it might be good: Thor has, arguably, been the weak link in the MCU’s solo films over the last decade but that all looks set to change with Taika Waititi in charge of Ragnarok. The New Zealand born director has a fairly immaculate record so far, and his unique style is bound to bring something new and exciting to the MCU. Cate Blanchett and Jeff Goldblum are never bad actors to have in your movie either.
The early trailers look brilliant as well and it looks as though Waititi has been given a lot of creative control over the project.
Why it might be bad: The trailers so far make it look as though Waititi has been able to merge his tone into the MCU effortlessly, but there are still some fans that are skeptical as to how this is going to work as a comic book movie.
While, personally, I am in little doubt as to whether this movie is going to be good, Waititi’s style is not for everyone and some fans may take against his eccentric approach.
A Bad Mom’s Christmas
Release Date: November 3rd
What is it: A sequel to the 2016 comedy, Bad Moms, starring Mila Kunis, Kathryn Hahn, and Kristen Bell.
Why it might be good: Bad Moms was anenjoyable flick that turned out to have a surprising amount of heart and was also a subtle comment on parenting in the 21st century. The sequel would be wise to follow in its footsteps, and the introduction of the main character’s moms could had a whole new layer to the narrative.
Why it might be bad: Comedy sequels rarely deliver and added a vacation to the title of a sequel is rarely a good sign. The story had no need for a follow-up and there is every chance this is just going to be a rushed cash grab with none of the charm of the first movie.
Murder on the Orient Express
Release Date: November 3rd
What is it: Kenneth Branagh’s adaptation of Agatha Christie’s iconic novel, Murder on the Orient Express
Why it might be good: Kenneth Branagh is a great director and he has some pretty reliable source material to draw from here. He also has a stellar cast to work with, including the likes of Judi Dench, Johnny Depp, Willem Dafoe and Star Wars‘ Daisy Ridley.
Why it might be bad: Getting the tone right here is essential and the first trailer for the movie has been rather divisive. While I enjoyed it, many feel that it was to camp a tone and that the movie could end up playing out like a caper, as opposed to a serious murder mystery. It will certainly be interesting to see how it does as the box-office.
Paddington 2
Release Date: November 10th
What is it: The sequel to 2014’s incredibly popular Paddington movie.
Why it might be good: Paddington was one of the most pleasantly surprising movies of 2014 and with all the cast and crew returning for the sequel, chances are this movie could turn out to be just as charming and enjoyable as the first.
Why it might be bad: It’s hard to imagine that a sequel to Paddington was ever planned and if that is the case, the second movie could overly rely on what made the first one so enjoyable, instead of being its own unique movie.
Justice League
Release Date: November 17th
What is it: The DCEU’s first attempt at a team up movie and arguably, the biggest movie of the autumn.
Why it might be good: The DCEU has not been gifted with the easiest of starts in the world but things look to be back on track a little after the success of Wonder Woman earlier this summer. The movie will depend massively on the chemistry of its cast, and if early trailers are to be believed, things look like they could be moving in the right direction.
Why it might be bad: In many ways, the odds are not in this movie’s favor. The audience has yet to be introduced to three of the main characters and many, myself included, would argue that it is too early in the DCEU timeline for a team up movie.
The movie will have to try hard not to fall into the same traps that Batman v Superman did, and if the movie’s tone and the script is anything like that, then we could be in trouble.
Daddy’s Home 2
Release Date: November 22nd
What is it: The sequel to 2015’s Daddy’s Home, with Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell reprising their roles.
Why it might be good: It might sound ridiculous but John Cena’s presence in cast of Daddy’s Home 2 could really make the movie. Cena has some serious comedic chops and has, thus far, been pretty damn funny in every comedy he has starred in – check out Sisters and Trainwreck, the guy is hilarious.
Why it might be bad: The first movie was pretty lame and there are very few people in this world who really wanted a sequel to this film. It’s also highly likely, considering how quickly this film has come about, that the film will just recycle all the jokes from the first movie.
