Warning. Major spoilers for Avengers: Infinity War follow…
In the build up to the release of Avengers: Infinity War, Marvel Studios warned fans “to be careful what they wished for” when it came to character deaths, and sure enough the superhero epic delivered in that regard.
During the movie, we saw Loki, Heimdall, Gamora and Vision fall at the hands of Thanos, before the Mad Titan completed his Infinity Gauntlet, snapped his fingers, disintegrating the likes of Black Panther, Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, Winter Soldier, Falcon, Scarlet Witch, Star-Lord, Groot, Drax, Mantis, Nick Fury and Maria Hill.
Now, we suspect that all of those who ceased to exist following the snap will all be back in Avengers 4, but according to co-writer Christopher Markus, that isn’t the case:
“[Avengers 4] doesn’t do what you think it does,” said Markus in an interview with Buzzfeed. “Also… [the deaths are] real. I just want to tell you it’s real, and the sooner you accept that, the sooner you will be able to move on to the next stage of grief. We wanted that thing that happens at the end of that movie to have as much impact as possible. If you’re very carefully getting rid of your supporting cast, then it does seem like you’re pulling your punch.”
“First of all, we would do it all over again,” said McFeely with regards to the decision to kill of Black Panther despite the enormous success of February’s solo movie. “But remember, when we’re writing [Infinity War], and even shooting, there is no Black Panther movie. We don’t know it’s going to be so good, so effective, so resonant. And we had to treat all these characters the same. People who leave us [in Infinity War] are the leads of their own franchises. And Black Panther’s no different.”
So, I guess that means Spider-Man: Homecoming 2 isn’t going to feature Peter Parker, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is a Rocket Raccoon solo movie…
