Benedict Cumberbatch and Scott Derrickson talk Doctor Strange, new character rumours surface

August 26, 2016 by Gary Collinson

With just a little over three months to go before Marvel Studios unleashes Doctor Strange, Total Film has been chatting to star Benedict Cumberbatch and director Scott Derrickson about the latest chapter of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

“There’s never been any limitation on the weirdness that I was striving for and that I think the comics represent,” states Derrickson, describing the movie as “out there”. “[Marvel are] not at all enslaved to the source material, but they are, I think, very good at recognising what made each comic great.”

Derrickson then spoke about the decision to explore the origin of Stephen Strange’s Sorcerer Supreme, adding that: “I think that the movie needed to tell that origin in order to become invested in the character. But also, some familiarity was required given the incredible weirdness the movie gets into.”

Benedict Cumberbatch also shared a few words about his character’s “fantastic” arc in the movie, stating: “‘It’s a story about him discovering he doesn’t know anything: he’s just at the beginning of understanding what our reality’s about… I get to watch him go through this arc: I know there’s Stephen before and there’s Stephen after he goes on this soul searching journey.”

Meanwhile, The Hashtag Show is reporting that the characters Jericho Drumm/Brother Voodoo and Tina Minoru will appear in the movie; both featured in Marvel’s Doctor Strange Prelude comic (UPDATE: As pointed out in the comments, it’s Jericho’s brother Daniel who appears in the comic), so it’s certainly possible – although The Hashtag Show haven’t always been on the money with their reports in the past, so treat this one firmly as a rumour.

Marvel’s Doctor Strange follows the story of the talented neurosurgeon Doctor Stephen Strange who, after a tragic car accident, must put ego aside and learn the secrets of a hidden world of mysticism and alternate dimensions. Based in New York City’s Greenwich Village, Doctor Strange must act as an intermediary between the real world and what lies beyond, utilizing a vast array of metaphysical abilities and artifacts to protect the Marvel cinematic universe.
