Captain Marvel’s Brie Larson isn’t interested in the “first female Marvel movie” tag

December 5, 2018 by Amie Cranswick

It’s been a long time coming, but we’re now only a few months away from the release of Marvel Studios’ first female-led superhero blockbuster Captain Marvel. And following the release of yesterday’s new trailer, Brie Larson has been chatting to Collider about the movie, during which she was asked how she felt about being the first actress to headline a movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

“I don’t know,” said Larson. “I don’t know how it’s any different. To be honest, I don’t want it to feel different. Kind of over the first female blah, blah, blah. And like, ‘Wow, maybe women can actually do the same things that dudes can do. Like, what a crazy concept!’ You know what I mean? I feel like the more we talk about it, the more we perpetuate the myth that it’s an impossible task. It’s like, no. If it wasn’t like that before it’s because it was wrong. That was just wrong. Now we’re just doing what’s natural.”

The Oscar-winner certainly has a point, but it’s also understandable why a lot is being made of Captain Marvel being the MCU’s first female-fronted movie, given that it has taken 21 instalments to get here. What do you make of Larson’s comments? Do you agree, or should Captain Marvel be celebrated for finally putting a female hero front and centre in the MCU?

Set in the 1990s, Marvel Studios’ Captain Marvel is an all-new adventure from a previously unseen period in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that follows the journey of Carol Danvers as she becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes. While a galactic war between two alien races reaches Earth, Danvers finds herself and a small cadre of allies at the center of the maelstrom.

Captain Marvel is being directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck (Mississippi Grind) and sees Brie Larson (Kong: Skull Island) leading the cast as Carol Danvers alongside Samuel L. Jackson (The Avengers), Ben Mendelsohn (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story), Djimon Hounsou (Guardians of the Galaxy), Lee Pace (Guardians of the Galaxy), Lashana Lynch (Fast Girls), Gemma Chan (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them), Algenis Perez Soto (Sambá), Rune Temte (Eddie The Eagle), McKenna Grace (I, Tonya), Annette Bening (American Beauty), Ana Ayora (The Big Wedding), Vik Sahay (Chuck), Kenneth Mitchell (Star Trek: Discovery), Chuku Modo (The Good Doctor), Clark Gregg (The Avengers) and Jude Law (Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald).
