The friendliest ghost around is looking to come back to the small screen as Disney+ is developing a live-action Casper series from Goosebumps producers Rob Letterman and Hilary Winston with Steven Spielberg.
The series is described to be “a modern update on the classic ghost story” which will have a more serious and darker tone than typical Casper media similar to Netflix’s Wednesday compared to past iterations of The Addams Family.
Casper follows a young ghost and his misadventures with the living while his three mischievous uncles terrorize people for fun. He was created in 1945 and has starred in several animated specials, TV shows and comics with the 1995 live-action film starring Christina Ricci, Malachi Pearson, Bill Pullman and Devon Sawa being a 90s classic.
Letterman and Winston will write with Letterman directing. They will also executive produce with Spielberg, who produced the 1995 film through Amblin Entertainment.
Disney won the series in a bidding war between streaming platforms, but it has not given a greenlight to Casper for a full series order. We will have to wait and see how development moves forward to see if Casper will float back to TV and how this darker take will be handled.
