Martin Carr reviews the fifth episode of Gotham Season 2…Back history, pipe bombs and flame retardant arsonists are just a few things on offer this week in Gotham. Giving us an antique blade, old wife’s tale and a suitably creepy woman to impart said story just adds atmosphere. With Penguin still on a choke chain, Galavan […]
Gotham Season 2 Episode 4 Review – ‘Strike Force’
Martin Carr reviews the fourth episode of Gotham season 2… Adding a militant edge to this show was someone else’s bright idea. Gotham needed something to combat the rise of these villains and their answer came in spades this week. By bringing in Michael Chiklis as Nathaniel Barnes, show runners have hopefully brought someone capable […]
The Strain Season 2 Episode 12 Review – ‘Dead End’
Martin Carr reviews the twelfth episode of The Strain season 2… In typical fashion I am yet again running to catch up. Procrastination should replace my middle name as Christian no longer seems adequate. Legend has it that Robert Towne, master screenwriter, was horrendous at finishing things. There would always be a reason, an emergency, or […]
The Strain Season 2 Episode 13 Review – ‘Night Train’
Martin Carr reviews the season finale episode of The Strain season 2…A slaughter house and the promise of processed carcasses is one stark metaphor for a finale. In this respect The Strain spares no quarter in its desire to push the boundaries of expectation. Like a grand high executioner Eichorst bears witness to this feat of […]
Gotham Season 2 Episode 3 Review – ‘The Last Laugh’
Martin Carr reviews the third episode of Gotham season 2…Storm clouds are gathered and winter is coming but this is no Game of Thrones. As Essen bleeds out and Gordon’s face turns to Mount Rushmore, you feel some serious shit is being thrown down. This is Straight Outta Compton crossed with New Jack City wearing […]
The Strain Season 2 Episode 10 Review – ‘The Assassin’
Martin Carr reviews the tenth episode of The Strain season 2…Does anyone remember The Day of the Jackal? Not the sub-standard, Bruce Willis pay check movie where David Addison dyed his hair blonde. I mean the Edward Fox effort which portrayed a cold blooded, calculating killer wrapped up in a web of deceit. Before the […]
The Strain Season 2 Episode 11 Review – ‘Dead End’
Martin Carr reviews the eleventh episode of The Strain season 2…This is a two hander with some history thrown in. Split evenly between The Mayfield Hotel and Nazi Germany circa 1931 to 1935, The Strain proves adept once more at weaving a compelling web. You always had the inkling that Thomas Eichorst was a coward, […]
Gotham Season 2 Episode 2 Review – ‘Knock Knock’
Martin Carr reviews the second episode of Gotham season 2…Up in your face like Eli Roth on acid, episode two carves its intention across the screen using big fat marker pens. Coming across like a youthful Nicholson with all the imbalance of Ledger’s darkly edged Joker, Jerome sets a fire under your arse straight out the […]
Gotham Season 2 Episode 1 Review – ‘Damned If You Do’
Martin Carr reviews the first episode of Gotham season 2…From the opening frame of this new season Gotham seems like a different animal. There is a swagger in the step, a confidence somehow sealed in stone, which was lacking last year. Those villains are nastier, more sordid and somehow more stylish as a result. There […]
The Strain Season 2 Episode 9 Review – ‘The Battle for Red Hook’
Martin Carr reviews the ninth episode of The Strain season 2…In the words of legendary singer songwriter Tom Waits I am a day late and a dollar short. Right now more than a week late and well past due on this review. It could said, and you wouldn’t be the first to say that I […]
