Christopher Landon reveals working title for Happy Death Day 3 that he hopes to make someday

September 15, 2020 by Liam Waddington

While director Christopher Landon is currently helming a brand new horror-comedy for Blumhouse and Universal, titled Freaky, the filmmaker’s Happy Death Day franchise is on hold right now after the release of 2019’s Happy Death Day 2U.

However, during an interview with Empire, Landon revealed the working title for the potential third instalment in the Happy Death Day series that he hopes to make someday but confirms there is nothing official in the works at the moment.

“It’s called Happy Death Day To Us. That is the working title,” he said.

Landon continued, “[Happy Death Day To Us] is definitely off to the side at the moment. I wish it wasn’t, and I know that [Jason Blum, producer] is passionate about it, I know I’m very passionate about it, and I know that [Jessica Rothe is really eager to do it as well. I wrote the idea for the third movie some time ago. I think we’re all excited by it, because it’s different than the other two films, and so we’re really just crossing our fingers and hoping that our fanbase continues to grow – which is something that I’ve really enjoyed watching over the years, seeing more and more people discover both films. So who knows. There might be a time when it makes sense, and hopefully, it’s sooner rather than later.”

The original 2017 Happy Death Day follows Tree (Rothe) who relives the same day every time she is murdered on her birthday, forcing her to uncover the masked killer’s identity and stop the time loop. The second film featured another masked killer while also expanding on the world and introducing an alternate dimension storyline, reminiscent of Back to the Future Part II. Happy Death Day 2U also ended with a post-credits scene that could lead to a possible sci-fi future for the franchise.
