Christopher Nolan won’t return to the world of “small scale” filmmaking

February 3, 2024 by EJ Moreno

We all remember the headlines when Christoper Nolan got the 2023 smash hit Oppenheimer to a budget of only $100 million, but that seems to be as low as Nolan is willing to go now.

Known for his explosive blockbusters with epic scale, scope, and budgets, the filmmaker tells Time that working with smaller projects is far past him.

“I’m drawn to working at a large scale because I know how fragile the opportunity to marshal those resources is,” states Nolan. “I know that there are so many filmmakers out there in the world who would give their eye teeth to have the resources I put together, and I feel I have the responsibility to use them in the most productive and interesting way.”

While the iconic filmmaker hasn’t announced his post-Oppenheimer project, Nolan is still riding the wave of the massively successful blockbuster. Oppenheimer is entering the 2024 Oscars with 13 nominations and is the frontrunner in multiple categories, including Best Picture and Best Director.

Written for the screen and directed by Christopher Nolan, OPPENHEIMER, thrusts audiences into the mind of theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy), whose landmark work as the director of the Manhattan Project’s Los Alamos Laboratory created the first atomic bomb.

Starring alongside Cillian Murphy’s titular scientist are Emily Blunt, Florence Pugh, Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon, Rami Malek, Benny Safdie, Josh Hartnett, Dane DeHaan, Casey Affleck, Jack Quaid, Matthew Modine, Dylan Arnold, David Krumholtz, Alden Ehrenreich, David Dastmalchian, Olli Haaskivi, Jason Clarke, James D’Arcy, Michael Angarano, Guy Burnet, Danny Deferrari, Matthias Schweighöfer, Gary Oldman, Harrison Gilbertson, Emma Dumont, Devon Bostick, Trond Fausa, Christopher Denham and Josh Zuckerman
