Comic Book Review – Assassins Creed: Templars #2

April 27, 2016 by Calum Petrie

Calum Petrie reviews Assassins Creed: Templars #2…

In the bustling streets of Shanghai, Darius Gift has come unstuck, his head turned by a pretty girl and a stunning smile. His tenuous position as a newly initiated member of the Templar Order is under threat, until he is rescued by the mysterious figure that is Black Cross…

Once again we step into the world of Assassin’s Creed with a focus on the “big bad”, as we once again take a walk down the path of the Templar Order. The story of Darius Gift and the mysterious bogeyman of the Templar order known as Black Cross is all go, well at least for the first few pages. Then the story slows back to a pace where plot starts to thicken.

The thing about the Templar order is the sheer amount of talking and plotting that goes into being involved, sometimes it feels like it might be based within the houses of parliament.

I do have massive respect for the sheer amount of back story that must go into to creating a secret order that has its clutches on just about every society on the planet. I just feel that the dialogue heavy section kill the pacing of this issue, when you see the Assassin’s Creed brand you are going to expect climbing high buildings and stabbing with concealed weapons.

Black Cross appears to be the focus character of this issue, his mission seems to be taking off after helping Darius in the early stages. His investigation leads him to start to hunt down the culprits of the information leaks within the order.

Though this man is supposed to be the one man police force of the order he almost feels like a Batman kind of role where his investigation is more of a focus. The issue starts with Black Cross defending Darius and ends with him being baited into a trap by the culprit of the attack.

The character of Darius in this issue is mainly put to the back of the priority list, as for most of the issue he is absent. He is used more as a storytelling technique used to drive the mission of Black Cross and set him on the path of hunting down the possible traitors within the Templar order of Shanghai.

All the while Darius has to try and recover the item that his Templar overlords instructed him to deliver, the character of Darius comes across very as a bumbling fool almost. His legacy seems to be more important that than his induction into the Templar order.

I know deep down this will more than likely be used to show the characters development through the issues, but I look forward to whatever the end game is building up to be.
