Comic Book Review – Chew #43

September 24, 2014 by Jessie Robertson

Jessie Robertson reviews Chew #43…

The “Chicken Tenders” storyline continues on here in part 3 of 5, although I can’t figure out where it’s ultimately heading.

This month’s issue deals with Olive Chu, the legitimate daughter of Tony (who is sent out of the country to freezing Antarctica Thanks Applebee!). We’re shown her training under Savoy and the limits of her abilities. Spoiler alert! There are no limits to her abilities! Being the daughter of Tony Chu, she inherited his Cibopathic abilities, but she can choose to use her ability at will and may learn deep histories of things she eats – e.g. she licked every page of a dictionary and won a spelling bee.

Olive is a highly skilled mercenary who favors her dad and understands his burdens and responsibilities. She and Savoy team up with Colby and his back-up, POYO!, to investigate a man working for the Collector, which leads them to an underground Russian Cake operation. There, Olive gets to show off her skills, even showing up Poyo, as Savoy beams at the work of his trainee.

The issue feels light on content but provides a more serious tone this week and only getting like two panels of Tony was an interesting choice, to instead focus on Olive. But I liked the choice and the issue ended on a crazy cliffhanger that I can’t wait to find out what happens next issue.
