Comic Book Review – Reyn #1

January 25, 2015 by Andrew Newton

Andrew Newton reviews Reyn #1…

Reyn is a freelance swordsman and monster hunter who also might be the last of the legendary “Wardens” of the land of Fate, whose ranks long since faded into myth. He’s haunted and driven by visions from a “guiding angel” who sets him on the path of a great quest— though Reyn’s hardly the errant knight-type. He’ll rescue and partner with the sorceress Seph, a member of a coven known as the Followers of Tek, hunted as heretics for their beliefs, but who may know what secrets Fate holds.

Image Comics bring us a new epic sword and sorcery series titled Reyn.  Written by Kel Symons and with art by Nate Stockman, Reyn is a story set within the ‘Land of Fate‘.  Once filled with light, the Land of fate is now suffering a thousand years of cold and darkness due to the ‘Great Cataclysm’ which caused the disappearance of all but one of ‘The Wardens’.

Our last remaining Warden is our titular character, Reyn, who whilst on his travels comes across Seph, a member of the Followers of Tek. Reyn’s presence in a town gains the attention of who I suspect to be the antagonists.

Kel Symons has done a great job of setting out the main characters in this first issue.  It is an excellent example of storytelling at its best.  The story is also backed up perfectly by the artwork of Nate Stockman whose artistic style fits in perfectly with the genre.

This is an excellent first issue and it’s one series that I’m keen to follow.  If you’re into the swords and magic genre then this is one series I’d recommend you look at.
