Constantine reboot coming to HBO Max from J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot

February 18, 2021 by EJ Moreno

The DC spellcaster is heading for another round of television. We’ve learned today, from multiple sources, that HBO Max is reviving Constantine as a TV series. However, this version will see the creative team starting from scratch.

J.J. Abrams will produce the new series under his Bad Robot production label and WarnerMedia has nabbed British novelist Guy Bolton to pen the pilot episode. They’ll take over the character, who saw his popularity grow from the 2014-15 NBC show and subsequently appearing on The CW’s Arrow and Legends of Tomorrow.

One of the most significant changes this new version will see is that John Constantine will likely be a man of color. This will be a departure from the two previous live-action versions, where he was portrayed by Keanu Reeves and the fan-favorite Matt Ryan. The British occult detective is known for hunting the supernatural and boasts a cocky swagger.

This Constantine series will likely tie into the planned Justice League Dark, which Abrams and Bad Robot are also developing. Could the producer be building an iconic horror superhero team piece-by-piece?

The new Constantine series will join the other DC projects coming to HBO Max, such as the Peacemaker series starring John Cena, the Gotham City PD spinoff from Matt Reeves’ The Batman, and a Green Lantern series from Seth Graheme-Smith and Marc Guggenheim.
