David Ayer to direct Harley Quinn spinoff movie Gotham City Sirens

December 13, 2016 by James Garcia

For months we’ve been hearing about a Margot Robbie-produced Suicide Squad spinoff film centering on or at least featuring Harley Quinn, but didn’t have any concrete details… until now!

According to THR, Robbie isn’t the only Suicide Squad alum to board the project, as David Ayer has signed on to direct what is now being called an “all-female DC villains movie” called Gotham City Sirens. In the pages of DC Comics, the “Sirens” were typically made up of popular villainesses from Batman’s rogues gallery, including Quinn, Catwoman, and Poison Ivy.

The film will be written by the Tomb Raider reboot and Sherlock Holmes 3 scribe Geneva Robertson-Dworet, executive produced by Robbie, and overseen by Geoff Johns and Jon Berg.

According to the report, Warner Brothers is still hoping to develop a Suicide Squad sequel (despite some bad reviews overall, the film did gross nearly $750 million worldwide, and will likely make quite a bit on home video) and is also “looking into” a spinoff film featuring Will Smith’s Deadshot.

As of right now, Gotham City Sirens does not have an official release date, but is reportedly “on the fast-track.” With Ben Affleck taking his time with The Batman, could Sirens end up in the July 2018 slot that Aquaman just vacated? Only time will tell, but after reports of a rushed production to make Suicide Squad, we’re hoping Ayer has a bit more time to develop and shoot his next DC film.
