David Tennant and Catherine Tate returning to Doctor Who for 60th anniversary

May 15, 2022 by Gary Collinson

After last week’s reveal that Sex Education star Ncuti Gatwa will be taking on the role of the Fourteenth Doctor, the BBC has some further huge news for Doctor Who fans today with the announcement that David Tennant and Catherine Tate will be returning to the series in 2023 as part of the show’s 60th anniversary celebrations.

“It looks impossible – first, we announce a new Doctor, and then an old Doctor, along with the wonderful Donna, what on earth is happening?” teased incoming showrunner Russell T. Davies. “Maybe this is a missing story. Or a parallel world. Or a dream, or a trick, or a flashback. The only thing I can confirm is that it’s going to be spectacular, as two of our greatest stars reunite for the battle of a lifetime.”

The news reunites Davies with Tennant and Tate, having been showrunner for their entire run as the Tenth Doctor and Donna Noble during his first spell on the show. The BBC is keeping tight-lipped on the nature of their involvement, but their scenes will air in 2023 as the series celebrates the 60th anniversary of its very first episode back in 1963.

Before we get to Ncuti Gatwa’s Fourteenth Doctor and the return of Tennant’s Tenth, we do still have one final appearance from Jodie Whittaker’s Thirteenth Doctor and current showrunner Chris Chibnall, with an as-yet-untitled special set to air in October.
