Deadpool looking at $170 million plus global opening weekend

February 12, 2016 by Gary Collinson

20th Century Fox’s Deadpool has been rolling out this week, with the film opening in the UK on Wednesday and making its way across the Pond to North America today.

Early tracking had suggested the film would be looking at a $55 million domestic opening weekend, but it looks like the Merc with a Mouth is set to blow that figure out of the water; it pulled in $12.7 million on Thursday previews, a record for an R-rated film, and is looking at around $30 million on Friday, with a four-day weekend of $90 million or more predicted.

Deadpool has a shot of setting more February records, with Fifty Shades of Grey currently holding the opening day ($30.28 million), three-day ($85.2 million) and four-day ($93 million) records.

Internationally, Deadpool could pull in a further $80 million; it is performing well in all 42 markets, and here in the UK it has given Fox its biggest ever opening day for an R-rated movie with $3.4 million – which also happens to be 42% higher than X-Men: Days of Future Past.

Based upon Marvel Comics’ most unconventional anti-hero, DEADPOOL tells the origin story of former Special Forces operative turned mercenary Wade Wilson, who after being subjected to a rogue experiment that leaves him with accelerated healing powers, adopts the alter ego Deadpool. Armed with his new abilities and a dark, twisted sense of humor, Deadpool hunts down the man who nearly destroyed his life.

Deadpool is set for release on February 10th in the UK and February 12th in the States and sees Ryan Reynolds reprising the role of the Merc with a Mouth alongside T.J. Miller (Transformers: Age of Extinction) as Weasel, Morena Baccarin (Gotham) as Copycat, Gina Carano (Fast & Furious 6) as Angel Dust, Ed Skrein (Game of Thrones) as Ajax, Stefan Kapicic (24) as Colossus, Leslie Uggams (Roots) as Blind Al and newcomer Brianna Hildebrand as Negasonic Teenage Warhead.
