Dexter’s Trinity Killer prequel spinoff gets update, John Lithgow attached

December 25, 2024 by Gary Collinson

Showtime returned to the world of Dexter this month with the premiere of the prequel series Dexter: Original Sin, and with filming gearing up to get underway on the sequel Dexter: Resurrection in January, we now have an update on another potential spinoff first teased back at the start of 2023.

As revealed by Deadline, not only is the proposed Trinity Killer prequel series still in active development, but the scripts have been written and a deal has already been agreed with John Lithgow to reprise his role as narrator.

“We wrote the entire Trinity Killer series,” said original Dexter showrunner Clyde Phillips, who serves as co-creator and executive producer of the Trinity Killer project alongside Dexter veteran Scott Reynolds. “John Lithgow has agreed to be the voice of his younger self the way Michael Hall is doing for [Original Sin]. There’s that and we’re doing another show with Michael C. Hall, [Resurrection]. We were writing that while shooting Original Sin, so that’s fairly busy. We begin shooting [Resurrection] in January and it will air in June 2025.”

John Lithgow portrayed the Trinity Killer, the murderous alias of seemingly mild-mannered family man and church deacon Arthur Mitchell, as the main antagonist of Dexter’s fourth season, with Lithgow winning Golden Globe and Emmy Awards for his efforts. He briefly reprised the role for a cameo in the 2021 miniseries Dexter: New Blood.

The 1990s-set Dexter: Original Sin premiered on Showtime on Paramount+ on December 13th, with Showtime touting it as its most-streamed premiere ever with 2.1 million viewers in its first three days of availability. New episodes arrive on Fridays through to its finale on Valentine’s Day.
