Director David F. Sandberg on the appeal of Shazam!

July 22, 2017 by Gary Collinson

A couple of days ago, it was announced that Warner Bros.’ next DC project to go into production will be the Shazam! movie, with Lights Out and Annabelle: Creation director David F. Sandberg taking on the reins of Billy Batson and his superhero alter-ego Captain Marvel for his big screen debut.

Following the announcement, Sandberg took to Reddit to share a few brief thoughts on the appeal of the character, stating that: “To keep it general and not go into script details I’d say the core thing that’s appealing to me is the wish fulfillment. What kid doesn’t want to be Superman? This is a kid that basically gets to become Superman.”

As yet, there’s no word on potential casting or a release date for Shazam!, and while it had been expected that we’d get some details during Warner Bros.’ Comic-Con panel this Saturday, Sandberg has said that he won’t be present and is only in San Diego to promote Annabelle: Creation.
